Inspiring
Great Partnerships
Business
Development is integral to the success of both our R&D and Commercial
organizations.
Our strategic alliances have enabled us to enter the commercial
ophthalmology and allergy markets. Through a blend of in-licensing
and our own research, we have created a balanced portfolio, along
with a rich array of compounds in early development and research:
Our
scientific expertise in P2 receptor technology, based on an original
collaboration with the University of North Carolina (UNC), has received
worldwide recognition and has yielded a strong intellectual property
position. Inspire scientists have made and patented numerous discoveries
relating to P2Y2 receptors, their agonists
and their potential importance in the treatment of diseases involving
deficiencies in the body's natural mechanisms for protecting mucosal
surfaces such as the lungs, eyes and sinuses. Inspire has generated
a substantial patent portfolio
of U.S. patents from our P2Y2 research and
other areas.
Our
technology platforms for cytoskeletal active agents in glaucoma
are the result of exclusive licensing of patents from the Wisconsin
Alumni Research Foundation (WARF). The patents describe a novel
technology for the treatment of glaucoma, generally described as
"cytoskeletal therapy for glaucoma." These innovative
research programs include cytoskeletal active agents as potential
treatments for glaucoma, and novel receptor and enzyme targets for
pulmonary inflammation and edema.
Building
on a successful partnership with Allergan in the area of dry eye
disease, Inspire agreed to assume launch and full marketing and
sales responsibility for Elestat®
and to co-promote Restasis®.
These opportunities provided the ideal timing to assemble a first-rate
commercial team. This team rapidly achieved a highly respected commercial
presence within the Eye Care and Allergy medical communities. Elestat
garnered success in a crowded and highly competitive market, capturing
share from entrenched competitors within ophthalmology. Restasis,
by creating the dry eye prescription market segment, has become
the fastest growing product within the ophthalmology market.
